Welcome to USCAD
USCAD (University of Saskatchewan Certificate in Art and Design) is a preparatory Certificate of Attendance Program (non-credit/non-degree) designed to help build skills, confidence and understanding in the visual arts. We have structured all of our courses into a programmed approach of study including portfolio reviews and a final exhibition that, once successfully completed, will culminate in a Certificate of Attendance from the U of S. USCAD is a 'hands-on' approach to incremental skill development with the ultimate goal of building a portfolio of work in one of sculpture, painting, watercolour painting, drawing or photography/digital imagery.
USCAD is a preparatory program designed:
- For those persons who do not wish to pursue a baccalaureate degree but who desire to enhance their skills in art and design and do not want to leave Saskatchewan to enroll in a college of art and design;
- As a preparatory program for high school graduates who are interested in pursuing education in the arts, but who do not feel ready for a baccalaureate degree until they build skills and confidence;
- For non-credit art students who would like formal acknowledgement for their studies and who may wish to eventually pursue degree credit studies.
- For non-credit art students who prefer structured learning environments where courses are linked and knowledge is enhanced through continuity.
USCAD Goal
USCAD's overarching goal is to prepare the student for degree credit studies.
USCAD Objectives
USCAD is an entry-level program that provides instruction in the techniques and skills in drawing, painting, watercolour painting, sculpture, photography/digital imagery and design. Participants will learn to use these techniques and skills with their own creative processes to:
- acquire knowledge, skills, understanding, and the experience of art and of the mental and physical process required to produce art
- reach an understanding of ideas underlying the appearance, aims and intentions of contemporary art, and the relationship of that art to the values and organization of contemporary society
- develop creative thinking and an individual mode of expression.
Student Profile
USCAD is uniquely positioned to provide opportunities for a variety of students from the novice to the mature learner. High school graduates will enroll in USCAD to build skills and confidence in an area of interest to determine whether they would like to pursue or to prepare for future degree study in fine art. Adult learners will enter USCAD with the same goals in mind. Many former non-certificate students will want to apply for Prior Learning Assessment Recognition process to receive acknowledgement for their former coursework, to expand their program of study and to continue through to the exhibition stage. Other students will enter USCAD because they prefer taking a structured program of study rather than the occasional onetime non-certificate course.
